For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has created educational resources for use in supporting and educating young people aged 3-18 years old about online issues.
About Safer Internet Day 2019
Safer Internet Day 2019 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the global slogan of ‘Together for a better internet’.
This theme has been chosen by the Insafe network which is made up of Safer Internet Centres based in every European country. The theme encourages young people to work together to be positive, safe and respectful online.
In the UK the campaign will particularly empower young people to take control of their digital lives and consider how consent works in an online context. It will explore how young people ask, give and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos of how they manage their privacy and data.
Each year to help schools to celebrate Safer Internet Day we create a range of Education Packs which look at the theme in a way that is suitable for children and young people of different ages.
For Safer Internet Day 2018 our Education Packs were downloaded over 800,000 times, with teachers telling us of the positive impact these lessons had on their pupils.
One teacher said:
‘Students felt confident and were given a platform which enabled them to discuss concerns, ask questions and make disclosures.’ – Secondary school teacher, Surrey.
What is in the pack for educators?
The pack for teachers and educators has been designed to support educators in getting the most out of the Education Packs.
The pack includes information about how all the Education Packs can be used within different settings, the ways educators can get involved in Safer Internet Day, as well as advice on handling disclosures about online risks that may come up as a result of the day.
We understand that settings can have different amounts of time available to dedicate to Safer Internet Day, so this pack offers different options for adapting and using all of the Education Packs effectively, whether you have 30 minutes or more than a day to do so.
Staff led presentations
All of the Education Packs for young people contain presentations which can be delivered around the theme of digital consent along with detailed lesson plans, quick activities and wider activities.
Educators can also access Childnet’s staff led presentations which can be used when presenting to staff and parents about online safety messages.
