Pupils from Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) have described their elation after being crowned the first ever winners of the Childnet Film Competition International 7-11 age category.
This year, young people who attend school outside of the UK were able to enter Film Competition for the first time by submitting their short films reflecting a positive message.
Entries came from around the world, including schools in Mexico, Myanmar, Ireland, India, Turkey and Moldova.
And the young people of JESS Jumeirah in Dubai joined Kazakhstan’s Nazarbayev Intellectual School (11-18 age category) as the inaugural winners when the announcement was made last month.
“We are so proud to be chosen as winners of the Childnet International Competition 2021, in the 7-11 category,” said the winning entrants, Soha and Ayra (pictured below).
“We are elated and owe many thanks to our spectacular Computing teacher, Mr Murphy, whose lessons have taught us all the skills we have showcased in our short film.”
Describing their winning film on the theme of ‘Separating fact from fiction. Finding trustworthy information online’, the pupils added:
“At the beginning of the video, you see images of social media applications dancing around a girl’s head. This was stop motion and we were trying to show the many ways we receive information.
“Further into the film, you see a website. We designed this an application that is normally used for power points and presentations. We used the icon shapes to make a website and then edited it to display a fake website that a person may find online.”
The winning group and their school mates have been celebrating their success over the past month:
“When it was announced we had won, our school celebrated the success by giving us a special mention at assembly, sharing the short film in our classes and including us in the newsletter. What an experience!”
