Our annual film competition is back and this year it’s open to 7 – 18 year olds!
We love to celebrate the positive things that young people are doing online that’s why each year we hold a film competition that showcases young people’s creativity and understanding of e-safety issues.
Last year over 100 schools entered across two categories and this year is set to be even bigger as we expand the competition to include a whole new category for secondary age pupils and have upped the entry age to 18!
As Becky Nancarrow, Education Projects Officer at Childnet, said “for the last 5 years our film competition has given primary and secondary schools, as well as youth organisations, from across the UK, the challenge of creating a short film about internet safety. This year secondary schools will be able to get even more creative, as they are given the opportunity to illustrate another part of their digital lives through film.”
This whole new category has come from teaming up with PhoneBrian.
PhoneBrain is the brain child of PhonepayPlus the UK regulator for phone-paid services, and was created to educate young people about these services including the costs involved and how to make use of them without getting charged more than expected.
PhoneBrain’s category aims to educate young people about premium rate services by inspiring them to get creative. As David Owen from PhonepayPlus explained “With Childnet’s annual film competition in its sixth year, we see partnering with Childnet as a great opportunity to further extend the work of PhoneBrain, to reach more children and young people and inform them about how to use these services safely and confidently.”
Excitingly the category is aimed at 11 – 18 year olds, so not only does that open the competition up to more young people it also means the secondary age can enter 2 projects!

All of our shortlisted finalists will be invited to a private screening of their film at the BFI in London, where their film will be shown in front of our judging panel. The young people will be awarded some fantastic prizes for their school/youth group!
